Do not cease to pray

“Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:”1 Samuel 12:23 · KJV

Read in your Bible: 1 Samuel 10–12.

Saul is publicly established as king, and Samuel addresses the people about their request and their future responsibility. Even while confronting their wrong, Samuel promises continued prayer and instruction. His correction does not become abandonment.

Faithful leadership can speak plainly about sin while continuing to seek another person's good. Prayer is not a way to avoid accountability, and accountability need not become contempt. Samuel directs the people toward serving the Lord rather than making their future depend on his resentment.

Pray for someone whose decision has disappointed you. Consider what truthful help is still appropriate within healthy boundaries. If you must challenge a wrong, do so with a desire for restoration instead of the satisfaction of proving superiority.

Let us pray

Merciful Father, keep correction from hardening into contempt. Help me pray honestly for those who disappoint me and offer truthful guidance with humility, wisdom and appropriate boundaries. Amen.
