A voice in the quiet

“And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.”1 Samuel 3:10 · KJV

Read in your Bible: 1 Samuel 1–3.

Hannah brings her grief to the Lord and later entrusts Samuel to service at the sanctuary. As Samuel grows, he learns to recognise God's call with Eli's guidance. The story begins amid sorrow and a religious environment that is itself deeply flawed.

Prayer can be honest about anguish without becoming a bargain that guarantees a desired outcome. Samuel's unique prophetic calling also differs from treating every inner impression as divine speech. Listening to God includes attending carefully to Scripture and accepting wise, accountable guidance.

Make space for an unhurried prayer in your own words. If discerning a decision, compare your impressions with Scripture rather than demanding that others accept them as revelation. Offer patient attention to someone whose sorrow is easy to misunderstand.

A question to sit with

What would it mean to listen patiently instead of forcing an immediate answer?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Set aside a quiet interval for Scripture and honest prayer, then check on someone carrying sorrow.

Let us pray

Listening God, receive the grief I cannot neatly explain. Teach me to attend to Your word, welcome wise counsel and respond faithfully without claiming certainty You have not given. Amen.
