The question in the winepress

“And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?”Judges 6:14 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Judges 5–6.

Gideon threshes in hiding when the Lord calls him to deliver Israel. His questions arise from the painful contrast between remembered deliverance and present oppression. Before confronting Midian, he must also confront the idolatry close to home.

God's call does not depend on impressive self-confidence. Yet Gideon's specific commission is not a promise that every uncertain impression comes from God. His story invites dependence and a willingness to face local unfaithfulness rather than blaming every problem on distant enemies.

Bring a real question to God without disguising it as certainty. Examine one compromise within your influence before criticising the wider world. Seek Scripture and wise counsel as you discern a responsibility rather than demanding dramatic signs for every choice.

A question to sit with

What local compromise is easier for me to ignore than the problems I criticise elsewhere?

Let us pray

Patient God, meet me in honest uncertainty. Give me courage to face the wrong within my influence and wisdom to recognise a faithful next step without mistaking every impulse for Your voice. Amen.
