Laughter received, suffering noticed

“And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.”Genesis 21:1 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Genesis 19–21.

Genesis 19–21 moves through Sodom's destruction, Abraham's repeated deception and Isaac's birth. The promised child arrives because the Lord is faithful. The account also returns to Hagar and Ishmael, whose distress God hears in the wilderness.

God's promise is not vindicated by pretending that Abraham's family behaves well. Grace keeps exposing fear and wrongdoing while preserving the promised line. The chapter's attention to Ishmael warns against treating people outside our immediate story as disposable.

Thank God for one promise grounded in Scripture, and attend to a need beyond your household. Gratitude becomes distorted when receiving a blessing makes us indifferent to another person's tears.
