Justice needs room to hear

“And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.”Numbers 35:12 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Numbers 34–36.

As the land arrangements are completed, cities of refuge are provided. A person accused in a death is not simply surrendered to immediate vengeance; the case must be heard. The final inheritance instructions also attend to the continuity of family responsibilities.

The passage distinguishes intentional killing from an accidental death and limits a relative's retaliation. Justice requires more than an angry certainty that a wrong has occurred. Protection from summary vengeance is not the same as dismissing guilt or avoiding a fair judgment.

Refuse to spread an accusation before facts can be responsibly examined. Support proper safeguarding and lawful reporting where harm is alleged. Care for those at risk while resisting the crowd's demand to turn suspicion into an instant verdict.

A question to sit with

Have I treated an untested accusation as an opportunity to join a crowd?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Verify a claim before repeating it, and use an appropriate reporting process for genuine concerns.

Let us pray

God of justice, restrain my appetite for quick condemnation. Help me protect people at risk, speak accurately and support fair processes that seek truth without surrendering to revenge. Amen.
