Do not make vengeance a devotional method

“If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.”Numbers 30:2 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Numbers 30–31.

Numbers 30 treats vows as serious commitments. Chapter 31 records a severe ancient military judgment against Midian and its aftermath. These texts require careful attention to their covenant and historical setting rather than an easy transfer into modern personal conduct.

Keeping one's word is a continuing moral responsibility; claiming this ancient war as permission for present-day religious violence is not. Describing a biblical event does not give a reader authority to appoint enemies or harm people in God's name. Christ's teaching must govern Christian treatment of neighbours and opponents.

Keep a promise you can rightly fulfil, and seek an honest release from one you cannot. Do not preserve a harmful commitment simply because it was made solemnly. Protect people affected by coercion and seek appropriate counsel.

A question to sit with

Which commitment needs faithful action or an honest, responsible correction?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Fulfil a sound promise, or explain promptly and truthfully why you must renegotiate it.

Let us pray

Lord, make my words trustworthy and my judgment sober. Deliver me from using Scripture to justify cruelty, and guide me in keeping sound promises while ending commitments that perpetuate harm. Amen.
