Steady work while we wait

“But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.”2 Thessalonians 3:13 · KJV

Read in your Bible: 2 Thessalonians 1–3; 1 Timothy 1–3.

Paul corrects confusion about the day of the Lord and urges steady, responsible living rather than disorder. First Timothy then addresses truthful teaching, prayer and the character required for leadership. Waiting for Christ does not remove accountability in a community's present life.

End-time expectation should not be used to justify neglect or exploit another person's labour. Paul's correction is not permission to despise people unable to work because of illness, disability or lack of opportunity. Discernment requires attention to actual circumstances and a continuing commitment to care.

Complete a responsibility you have delayed while becoming preoccupied with predictions or controversy. If helping someone financially, understand their situation rather than assuming a motive. Encourage dependable service without shaming genuine need.

A question to sit with

What present responsibility has been crowded out by an argument or prediction about the future?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Fulfil one delayed duty and offer fair, informed support to someone facing a barrier to work.

Let us pray

Faithful Lord, keep my hope steady and my conduct responsible. Guard me from speculative distraction, help me distinguish unwillingness from inability and make my work and generosity thoughtful expressions of love. Amen.
