The pride of a borrowed breath

“But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:”Daniel 5:23 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Daniel 4–5.

Nebuchadnezzar's humiliation confronts his boast over Babylon, while Belshazzar later profanes sacred vessels and ignores the lesson already available to him. Daniel reminds the king that his very breath is in God's hand. Power cannot make a dependent creature self-sufficient.

Humility is truthful recognition, not a performance of worthlessness. Our capacities and opportunities are real, but they do not make us the source of life. Belshazzar's failure also warns that knowledge of another person's correction is useful only if we allow it to examine us.

Name an achievement with gratitude for the help and conditions that made it possible. Learn from a warning you have observed in someone else's life without claiming superiority. Let a small act of service interrupt the desire to be admired.

A question to sit with

What do I describe as entirely my own achievement while forgetting the help behind it?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Thank someone whose contribution made your work possible and give credit accurately.

Let us pray

Giver of breath, humble my boasting without crushing gratitude for useful work. Help me recognise dependence, learn from truthful warnings and use achievement in service rather than as evidence of self-sufficiency. Amen.
