No nation beyond accountability

“Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.”Jeremiah 46:28 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Jeremiah 46–48.

Jeremiah's oracles address Egypt, Philistia and Moab, describing the fall of powers that appeared secure. A promise to Jacob appears amid the judgments, holding discipline and God's continuing purpose together. The view widens beyond Judah without making its own failures disappear.

National strength does not place a people above moral accountability. Nor does another nation's judgment prove our innocence. These difficult oracles invite humility about power and trust in God's justice, while resisting the temptation to celebrate the suffering of ordinary people caught in conflict.

Pray for people living under war or political instability, including those outside your sympathies. Examine a form of pride in your own community. Choose a truthful, compassionate response instead of treating distant suffering as entertainment or proof of superiority.
