Order that makes service possible

“And they cast lots, ward against ward, as well the small as the great, the teacher as the scholar.”1 Chronicles 25:8 · KJV

Read in your Bible: 1 Chronicles 24–27.

Chronicles lists divisions of priests, musicians, gatekeepers and other workers. The arrangements include both teachers and learners, great and small. The detailed organisation distributes responsibility for a worshipping community rather than leaving every task to improvisation.

Order is useful when it enables people to serve and be cared for. It becomes distorted when a system matters more than the persons within it. The inclusion of learners also reminds us that shared work needs training, opportunity and patience as well as experienced skill.

Look at a rota, team or household arrangement you influence. Make a responsibility clear and provide support for someone still learning. Use planning to reduce confusion and unfair burdens rather than to make yourself indispensable.

A question to sit with

Does an arrangement I manage help others contribute or make everything depend on me?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Clarify one shared responsibility and give a learner the support needed to carry it.

Let us pray

Lord of our common life, guide our plans toward service. Help us share responsibility fairly, train learners patiently and build arrangements that care for people rather than merely preserving a system. Amen.
