Receive before you build

“And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?”1 Chronicles 17:16 · KJV

Read in your Bible: 1 Chronicles 17–20.

David intends to build a house for God, but receives a promise about what God will do for his household. His response is wonder and prayer. The surrounding accounts of royal activity sit beneath this reminder that God's grace precedes David's achievements.

We can become so occupied with what we will do for God that we forget to receive His mercy. David's covenant promise also reaches beyond his own capacity and points Christians toward the reign of Christ. Service begins in grateful dependence, not a need to make God indebted to us.

Pause before another task and name what you have received without earning it. Let gratitude change the tone of your work. Make room to listen instead of assuming that every good intention must be carried out on your timetable.

A question to sit with

Am I serving from gratitude or trying to prove that God should approve of me?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Begin one task with a short prayer of gratitude rather than a demand for a successful result.

Let us pray

Gracious Father, teach me to receive before I hurry to achieve. Let wonder at Your mercy free my service from self-importance and make me patient with Your direction and timing. Amen.
