Friendship that protects life

“And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.”1 Samuel 20:42 · KJV

Read in your Bible: 1 Samuel 19–20.

As Saul's hostility intensifies, Jonathan investigates the danger and helps David escape. Their friendship involves risk, truthfulness and a covenant of care beyond immediate advantage. David's departure is painful, but remaining near Saul is no longer safe.

Loyalty does not require denying a threat or forcing reconciliation before safety exists. Jonathan honours friendship by taking danger seriously. Faithful love may involve helping someone leave a harmful situation rather than urging them to prove trust by remaining exposed.

Listen carefully to a friend who says they are afraid. Do not make your comfort the measure of whether the danger is real. Help them reach appropriate support and protect confidential information while encouraging responsible, safe action.

Does my idea of loyalty protect someone's life and dignity?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Check privately on a friend under strain and offer specific, safe practical support.

Let us pray

Protecting God, make me a trustworthy friend. Help me hear danger without dismissal, speak truth with care and support wise steps toward safety rather than demand appearances of peace. Amen.
